This is a metal release plate with a hard rubber top. As slim as 3 or 4 stacked credit cards, this plate never interferes as I'm handling it off the tripod so I never take it off. It doesn't take up any noticeable space in my camera bag, either.
It is about 1/8th-inch wider than the base of the Canon 5d Mark II. With the Canon BG-E6 Battery Grip for Canon 5D Mark II Digital SLR, the plate makes contact from front to back, supporting the camera, grip and all, just right.
Compared against Velbon QB-635L Quick Release Plate for QRA-635, the Velbon QB-667L Quick Release Plate for QRA-667 is wider (see uploaded pictures), which means there is more surface area to grip and support the camera.
